Data residency
Where your data physically sits, and which laws follow from that.
Definition
The requirement or expectation that data is stored, and sometimes processed, within a defined geography. It is distinct from data access: data can reside in Frankfurt and still be viewed by an engineer in another country, which is a transfer in its own right.
Why it matters
Buyers frequently specify residency and forget access, then find that remote support staff hold administrative rights over the very system the residency clause was meant to protect. Decide what the requirement actually is, storage location or access restriction, and write that down, since they cost very different amounts to satisfy.
