Daily stand-up

A short daily sync on progress and blockers.

Definition

A brief recurring meeting, usually fifteen minutes, where a team surfaces what changed since yesterday and what is blocking anyone. In distributed teams it is often written rather than spoken, posted at the start of each person's day.

Why it matters

Its only real job is surfacing blockers early, and a stand-up that has become a status report to a manager has stopped doing it. If your team spans time zones, run it in writing: a spoken stand-up scheduled for one side's convenience quietly teaches the other side not to raise things.
