Working practice

Sprint

A fixed period of work ending in something you can look at.

Definition

A time-boxed iteration, usually one or two weeks, at the end of which the team produces working software and reviews it. The fixed length is the point: it forces scope to adjust to time rather than time stretching to fit scope.

Why it matters

For outsourced work the review at the end matters more than the ceremony around it. If you cannot see and use something at the end of each sprint, you have monthly reporting with sprint vocabulary attached, which tells you nothing until it is too late.
