Working practice

Asynchronous communication

Working through written messages that do not need an immediate reply.

Definition

A working style where information is written down where others can find it later rather than exchanged in real time. Decisions live in tickets, documents and pull requests, and meetings are reserved for things that genuinely need discussion.

Why it matters

Asynchronous work is not the absence of communication, it is more of it in written form, and teams that skip the writing simply become slow. The failure is a decision made in a call and never recorded, which the distributed half of the team discovers a week later while building the wrong thing.
