Working practice

Remote-first

Designing the way you work for people who are not in the room.

Definition

An operating stance where processes, documentation and meetings are built for distributed participation by default, rather than adapted from an office routine. In practice it means written decisions, recorded sessions, and no discussion that only makes sense to people who were physically present.

Why it matters

A hybrid team that is not remote-first will drift into a two-tier structure where the office decides and the remote half is informed. That shows up as remote people being described as less proactive, when they simply were not in the corridor. Fix the format, not the people.
