Pilot project
A small, real piece of work used to test a provider before committing.
Definition
A deliberately limited first engagement, usually a few weeks, chosen to be genuinely useful but low risk. It tests the working relationship, communication and quality rather than the sales process.
Why it matters
Pick something real. A pilot on a toy problem tells you nothing, because the difficulties in outsourced work come from context, dependencies and ambiguity, none of which a sandbox has. Decide the pass conditions in advance, or the pilot will end with everyone agreeing it went fine and nobody able to say what it proved.
