Definition
Confirmation that a candidate is who they say they are and has the history they claim: identity, education, previous employment, and where relevant criminal record or credit checks. What is lawful and standard varies significantly by country.
Why it matters
Decide what you actually need and let the provider run it under local law, since checks are personal data processing and doing them wrong is its own liability. The check people skip is the simplest: confirming that the person who interviewed is the person who starts.
