Hiring
Technical assessment
A structured test of whether someone can actually do the work.
Definition
A practical exercise, live or take-home, designed to observe how a candidate works on a problem resembling the real job. Good ones are scoped to a couple of hours, reviewed by someone who does the work, and produce a written judgement rather than a score.
Why it matters
Ask to see the assessment itself, not the result. Puzzle tests unrelated to the job filter for practice at puzzle tests, and unpaid multi-day exercises filter for candidates who can afford the time. Both narrow the field in ways that have nothing to do with the ability you are buying.
