English proficiency (CEFR)
A standard scale for describing working language ability.
Definition
The Common European Framework of Reference grades language ability from A1 to C2. For remote technical and support work, buyers typically look for B2 or above, meaning someone can hold a technical discussion and write clearly without the conversation slowing down.
Why it matters
Written and spoken ability diverge, and CV self-assessment is close to worthless. Judge it from an unscripted conversation and a piece of writing, not from a letter on a profile. For asynchronous work the writing matters more, because a message that has to be clarified costs a full exchange.
