Working practice

Localisation

Adapting a product or campaign to another market, not just translating it.

Definition

The work of making content fit a target market: language, but also currency, date and address formats, legal wording, imagery, and the conventions of the local channel. Translation is one part of it, and usually the smallest.

Why it matters

Buying translation and calling it localisation produces copy that is correct and reads as foreign, which costs conversion quietly and never shows up as a defect. Have a native speaker of the target market review the result in context, not the source text in a spreadsheet.
