Onboarding ramp
The time before a new person is fully productive.
Definition
The period during which someone new is learning your systems, conventions, and context rather than delivering at full speed. It applies to employees and outsourced staff alike, and is usually measured in weeks.
Why it matters
The ramp is the most commonly ignored cost in an outsourcing business case. A three-month engagement where the ramp is four weeks is really a two-month engagement. Budget for it explicitly, and treat a provider that claims there is no ramp as a warning rather than a promise.
