Engagement models
Staff augmentation
Adding external people to your own team, under your management.
Definition
An engagement model where individual professionals join your existing team and are directed by your managers, using your tools and your process. The provider handles sourcing, vetting, contracting, and payroll; you handle the work itself. It contrasts with project outsourcing, where the provider owns the deliverable rather than supplying the person.
Why it matters
The failure mode is treating augmented staff as a black box, assigning tickets without context and then being surprised by literal interpretations. People you manage need managing: onboarding, context, and a place in the review process. If you do not have the management capacity for that, project outsourcing is the more honest fit.
