Working practice

Pair programming

Two engineers working on the same problem at the same time.

Definition

A practice where two people work through a task together, one writing and one thinking ahead, swapping regularly. Remotely it runs over a shared editor or screen share, and works well in blocks of an hour or two rather than whole days.

Why it matters

Its highest-value use in outsourced work is onboarding, where it collapses weeks of guessing into a few sessions. Judged purely as output per hour it looks expensive, which is why it gets cut first. Budget it explicitly as ramp cost rather than defending it as a productivity measure.
