Working practice

Quality gate

An automated check work must pass before it can progress.

Definition

A rule enforced by tooling rather than by people: tests must pass, coverage must not fall, the linter must be clean, no critical vulnerabilities. Work that fails a gate cannot move to the next stage until it is fixed.

Why it matters

Gates are how a standard survives contact with deadline pressure, because a machine does not negotiate. Watch for gates that get bypassed routinely, since a rule everyone has learned to override is worse than none: it tells you the standard is theatre and hides the real state of the code.
